Flag placement ceremony

Jewish Cemetery American flag placement program

St. Louis Jewish War Veterans team up with local Boy Scouts and Scout leaders to place American Flags in the JWV grave markers of deceased Jewish veterans. The program starts at 8 am where Post 644 members feeds breakfast to approximately 350 Boy Scouts and their families. In 2018, the Boy Scouts placed approximately 7400 flags on the graves of Jewish St. Louis veterans in St. Louis Jewish cemeteries. We are very appreciative for this annual service project of our Greater St. Louis Council Boy Scouts and leaders. This program is funded by the St. Louis Jewish War Veterans Memorial Center.

Grave markers can be purchased at the JWV online store

St. Louis Jewish Cemetery Project

An ongoing veteran cemetery project seeks to identify veterans ‘grave sites in eight St. Louis area Jewish cemeteries. Flag holding grave markers, which JWV provides, are used to mark veterans’ grave sites. Currently, there are approximately 7400 Jewish veteran gravesites in eight local Jewish cemeteries which have been identified and have been transferred to a computer database.

Bingo at Missouri Veterans Home

JWV-Post 644 has been sponsoring bingo at the St. Louis Veterans Home North for the last 10 years, every two months. It takes two and usually three Post 644 members to facilitate this bingo.

Volunteering for bingo is very rewarding, knowing we provide an activity to our older veteran’s generation. Both, the men and woman veterans look forward to our bi-monthly bingo games. One can see the pleasure in their faces when we come in to set up to play. Not sure who enjoys this time more, us or the residents.

The average attendance is around sixty to eighty players. We pay $1.00 for a bingo win. The participants play on two bingo cards, giving them multiple chances to win. Also, we play four to five times on their bingo cards before they have to clear them. We even let any resident’s visitors to play also.

Once our time is up, we provide different types of snacks to everyone in the bingo room and they go away happy.
